When IVF is the best option, we recommend couples obtain appropriate testing (usually covered by insurance) that will help estimate an individual couple’s chance for conception with IVF. By completing the testing prior to proceeding with therapy, the couple can then make a more informed decision about whether to proceed and the best financial package to choose for their individual situation. In addition, the couple is better prepared to make an informed decision about the number of embryos to transfer. For example, a couple with a 5% chance for conception may be willing to transfer three embryos since the likelihood for triplets would be very low while a couple with a 60% chance of conception may consider an elective single embryo transfer.
Historical factors that affect pregnancy rates that are not easily identifiable in the summarized IVF success rates data tables from the CDC include, among others, smoking, weight (BMI), uterine fibroids, hydrosalpinx (blocked and dilated fallopian tubes), number of prior miscarriages, use of embryo biopsy with genetic testing of the embryo, radiation therapy to the pelvis, thin endometrial lining, history of DES exposure, number of good embryos transferred at IVF, and number of prior IVF attempts. Test results that can significantly impact pregnancy rates include high FSH, low AMH, and low ovarian assessment report results.
RCC has the widest variety of financial options for IVF patients in the United States, including insurance billing, low stimulation single cycle, conventional stimulation single cycle, multiple cycle discount packages (two, three or four fresh IVF cycles), and 100% money back guarantee options that include up to 6 fresh and all associated frozen embryo transfer cycles. By carefully predicting the expected IVF pregnancy rate, a couple is able to estimate the cumulative chance of conception offered by the various programs.
For example, if a couple has an estimated 35% chance for conception with each fresh IVF cycle then they may want to consider a three or four cycle financial plan in order to achieve an expected cumulative chance of conception of greater than 70%. We recommend that couples purchase an IVF financial option that is estimated to achieve their desired likelihood of pregnancy rather than just considering a single IVF cycle option.
As an example, if 100 similar couples with an expected conception rate of 35% underwent IVF until they conceived or until they had completed six fresh IVF cycles the cumulative chance for conception is expected to be over 90% (even without taking into account the possible frozen embryo transfer treatment cycles). This assumes that the chance for conception stays the same for each cycle which may not be applicable for all patients.

If a couple considering IVF wants to know the physician’s best estimate for their individual pregnancy rate per IVF cycle, the couple should ask what the IVF program would charge for a 100% money back guarantee. If a physician or practice does not offer a 100% money back guarantee program; why not?
It is easy for a program to provide overly optimistic pregnancy rates if there is no financial risk for the IVF program. It can be very misleading for programs to simply claim high pregnancy rates yet not provide the underlying information such as the number of cycles performed and the number of delivered pregnancies achieved for their claimed pregnancy rates. The validity of this information is further questionable when the physician does not report their pregnancy rates to the CDC as required by federal law. If a program is not providing their pregnancy rates to the CDC or SART, yet are claiming very high pregnancy rates on their Websites, it is worth asking for more detailed information and seeking independent verification.
When evaluating pregnancy rates, couples should also inquire regarding the IVF centers philosophy regarding cycle cancellation. Some programs have arbitrary rules that require a patient to cancel their IVF cycle because the expected conception rate is low or the number of follicles produced is low.
Our philosophy at RCC is to provide the couple with the best possible estimate of pregnancy rates (before starting and modified as indicated during treatment) and then help guide the couple in their decision making regarding whether to proceed (rather than forcing them to cancel so that it does not adversely affect the IVF center’s pregnancy rates). While our practice of guiding the couple and allowing them to make the decision to proceed may result in lower average pregnancy rates per cycle for the practice, it provides for more patient autonomy and decision making in the process and may offer a chance for conception for the individual couple that would otherwise not be available.
